Design Considerations

Designing a Chinese garden is a task that takes a lot of time and planning. There are certain elements that must be present in the garden in order for it to be considered a Chinese garden. The two main features are the water and the rocks, everything else is situated around them. The pond is used as a mirror that will reflect the trees, rocks, moon and the architecture. It is important that these objects be situated in the proper spot so that they will be seen in the pond from different views.

Incorporating the rocks into the garden is a difficult task. The rocks need to blend in with the surroundings and appear to be natural. Selecting the right types of rock is also very important. Placing the rocks into the garden in like putting together a puzzle, it needs to fit properly in order to look good.

The architecture is also a key element in the design of the garden. The pavilions and bridges are used to provide different views of the garden and also to make it seem bigger than it really is. Creating different views is one of the main design elements that must be present in the garden. To enter a Chinese Garden is a surprise, each step reveals something new and unexpected. This is created by using the bridges, pavilion and courtyards. These structures including the walkways create this surprising experience as one walks through the garden.

The final step in completing the garden is the placement and selection of the plants. It is crucial that the proper plants be selected. There are also certain plants that can always be found in a Chinese garden. These plants would be the pines, plums and bamboos. These would be considered the backbone of the plantings and then other plants can be incorporated into the design.
